Sheryl O'Sullivan is the self-titled debut by American singer-songwriter by Sheryl O'Sullivan. It was released on March 22, 2011 through Atlantic Records. After signing a three-album deal with Atlantic Records in May 2009, she began work alongside Jimmy Douglass, Tim Mitchell, and Greg Wells. O'Sullivan co-written eight of songs from the album. The recordings of the album took place between June 2009 to January 2011 at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York City. Its incorporates most commercial pop music style with strong elements of pop-rock, dance-pop, and synth-pop. Lyrically, the album explores themes in romantic relationships.
The album received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who praised O'Sullivan's vocal versatility. It debuted at number twenty-four and later reached number three on the US Billboard 200, the album became the second best-selling album of 2011, selling 2.1 million copies, and has been seven times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for shipments exceeding 7 million copies. Internationally, the album was also was certified platium in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, France, Ireland, Mexico, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The album sold over 9 million copies worlwide.
The album's lead single "You've Got To Know" peaked in the US Billboard Hot 100 at thirty-five, served as second single "Foolish Heart", reached number three, and worldwide reached the top ten in some countries, third album's single "Hush", reached number two and remained at that peak for two weeks in the Hot 100, and topped the charts in Australia, Canada and Spain, and New Zealand. The following singles, "If You Go Away (Close the Door)" and "Try" peaked number twenty-two and nine, on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively, and had a moderate successful around the world. O'Sullivan promoted the album by performing in various television shows.
